Science Behind the Stories: The Sci-Fi in Marissa Meyer's Cinder

I first read Cinder, author Marissa Meyer's futuristic, sci-fi retelling of the classic Cinderella , sometime in middle school. I absolutely loved it. It reimagined a fantastical story as something technical and developed. The entire time I read it, I was picking apart the science—I wondered what was realistic, and what wasn't.  Then I realized the book was the first installment of The   Lunar Chronicles series, where each book follows another girl with a reimagined sci-fi fairytale storyline, and I was in love . The plot. The worldbuilding. The science.  Everything . Consider the next couple weeks of my life booked. Literally.  So, without further ado, and likely a couple years overdue, I present to you the first segment in my Science Behind the Story series, featuring the science behind The Lunar Chronicles #1, Cinder. What Happens in the Book  ❗Spoilers:  This segment has spoilers! If you don't want to encounter them, steer away from the ominous-look...

A Feature on Whisper (+ Prologue)

I honestly have no idea of what dawned on me to stick with writing a book. I wasn't even keeping track of the word count, and only when I finished did I realize how long it actually was, and then I was just like; Woah. How exactly did I do that?

The idea began when I was around 9 and 10
just random spouts of thoughts on characters and world building. I always used to start writing something down, and then after Chapter 3, I'd forget it's existence and either lose interest or have no idea how I was supposed to continue with it.

I remember typing up the prologue of Whisper I was extremely proud of it when it was finished. And then 11-year-old me somehow continued, and chapter by chapter, it slowly grew to what it is as the finished copy.

In the book, the lives of Zarina, Luna, Trina, Fern, Ash, and Lucyna have all been normal until their school trip to 6th grade camp, where everything seemed to be anything but normal. An attack uncovers their ability to harness elemental power called Gifts as well as the key to an entirely new world of people who are like them. But the appear
ance of the six seem to release a string of events in these "cities of the lost," none of which are good, leading to the news of a series of unexplained kidnappings in the Gifted world. The six
with some new friends in the cities of the lost slowly uncover their role and destiny, while living in both the Gifted world and our world at the same time.

42 amazing chapters with battles with dragons, elemental magic, and unraveling an entire new world. Be sure to check out what other secrets and mysteries the Gifted world has to offer. The Cities of the Lost series is planned to have 5 books, Whisper being the first volume, and I'm working on book #2 titled Passage.

Prologue

Rain pounded on the windows of the dark and drained school. Children were everywhere, rushing to close the windows and get blankets to the wounded. The voices bounced back from the high ceilings, weaving its way through the people and cots, but fortunately not making its way outside, where more terror was sure to come. The whole scene was such a blur of black cloak uniforms and mixed with chaos, that no one had much time to register what was happening outside until they heard one, pure scream of terror. The sound came from a single girl, her eyes filled with fear, and one of her hands on the top of the window. The entire school was silenced, but all the girl could do was point out the open window with one shaky hand.

"Look."

Her whisper was barely audible, but everyone seemed to understand, and slowly looked out the large opening.

Hail-sized balls of fire had replaced the rain.

No one moved.

No one blinked.

And everyone seemed to remain silent in shock.

The force field would protect them, but not as long as anyone would like.

"You are our only hope," a woman hoarsely whispered, her long, brown and gray hair blowing in the slight wind as she looked out the window and towards the brightest star in the sky.
