Science Behind the Stories: The Sci-Fi in Marissa Meyer's Cinder

I first read Cinder, author Marissa Meyer's futuristic, sci-fi retelling of the classic Cinderella , sometime in middle school. I absolutely loved it. It reimagined a fantastical story as something technical and developed. The entire time I read it, I was picking apart the science—I wondered what was realistic, and what wasn't.  Then I realized the book was the first installment of The   Lunar Chronicles series, where each book follows another girl with a reimagined sci-fi fairytale storyline, and I was in love . The plot. The worldbuilding. The science.  Everything . Consider the next couple weeks of my life booked. Literally.  So, without further ado, and likely a couple years overdue, I present to you the first segment in my Science Behind the Story series, featuring the science behind The Lunar Chronicles #1, Cinder. What Happens in the Book  ❗Spoilers:  This segment has spoilers! If you don't want to encounter them, steer away from the ominous-look...

Meet the Author (+ Welcome!)

Hey there 👋. Happy new year! 🎉

I'm Ayesha, a typical (and also not-so-typical) 13-year-old girl with a vivid love of reading, writing, and coding. I've been intrigued in storytelling before I could even write, dictating spiels to be written down, and then bound by my hand with cardboard and countless staples to be turned into a "book" complete with the barcodes.

Whisper's Cover

I wrote my first novel as an 11-year-old, with over 117,000 words, titled Whisper. Whisper is a fantasy and adventure book that follows the lives of six kids who discover a whole new world after their 6th grade camp trip goes awry. Now, they have to navigate this new magical place and the world that we live in now simultaneously. These six kids have a major role to play in this new place one that they might fully understand yetbut they have a destiny to fulfill in these “cities of the lost.” After all, six new pairs of eyes can be useful to this old civilization.

Whisper is the first volume of a to-be five-book series called the Cities of the Lost. It is currently available on Amazon in both eBook and paperback versions. As of right now, I'm working on Book #2, titled Passage.

I'm also editing and preparing my next novel, The Legends of Atruviia (not in relation with the Cities of the Lost series), to publish soon. Right now, it's around 45,000 words, similar to Whisper in it's aspects of fantasy and adventure.

I'll plan to add new additions to my Wordy Writing Journey every week or so, ranging topics on writing and reading, and overall viewpoints on my journey as an author. So, mark your calendars, everyone I'm making a bold commitment for every Monday morning, with a new post.
